Common Assault (x3) - Likely outcome?

Hello. My friend "Miss A" (female) was waiting for a lift home from work by her friend "Miss B" who also had Miss A's son (14 years old) in the car with her. As she waited, she was assaulted outside her works by her ex-partner/father to their son (who doesnt work there). As the assault took place, her freind and son drove into the car-park and saw what was going on. They got out of the car and flew over - only to themselves be assaulted. The bloke ran off, and was on the run for 2 days before giving himself in to Police. He was charged with 3 counts of common assault, to which he's pleaded not guilty - and now a trial date has been set for September.
Any ideas what sentance he's likely to get?
I should point out that it's his first offence - but there were witnessess who said he "acted like a madman" - but he's a slippery character, and thinks nothing of lying.

If the injuries are relatively minor he'll probably not get anything worse than community service. He may be ordered to complete some type of 'anger management' course.

The injuries were cuts and bruises.
From having a look at other sites - it seems factors that can increase sentance are things like - it happened at work, it happened to and infront of the child, it was unprovoked (as witnessess saw him come over, and she just tried to get away) - and the other woman is partially disabled from a stroke - and the attack was sustained (for over 3 minutes - until help arrived), so not just a single punch, but included kicking.

sorry - just another thought - i also meant to ask.....

why on earth, when 3 people were assaulted, other independants witnessed it, and he ran off for two days - would he plead 'not guilty'?

what possible defence could he be planning to use to 'get away' with it? Or would pleading 'not guilty' be just to buy time, see what turns up, and probably plead guilty when the court date arrives?
