Can anyone identify these opening lines from books by Scottish writers?

These are the first lines I can't find from a quiz of 25. I've exhausted our own bookshelves .the local library the local bookshop and googling them and so would be grateful for any help you can give.

p-potter - am sceptical here - there is no ways if you google in 2 - you won't get an answer.
I think no.4 is Smollett, but I can't remember which book :o(

Thanks, boxtops and the Builder I'm afraid,in my ignorance, I haven't come across either of these before. Carmalee I can assure you I did google 2 Are you taking into account the 'he murmured'?
The ones I found, I cut and pasted the whole quotation into the search box, with speech marks round it - they came up straight away. Can't find the others yet, though!
yes p-potter - I googled in the whole line and came up with a long account of a wartime flight - perhaps if you read through it that may have the answer - didn't mean to appear abrupt - sorry

I've now got number 5 as well. The help I got encouraged me to persevere online. It turns out I've even read the book. Only number 2 to go.

Yes that's the poem that's quoted in the first line of the book but I'm looking for the name of the book and its Scottish author. Thanks.
