You're unlikely to be able to get a mortgage without a job, especially with the economy being the way it is right now.

Depending on exactly how much money you have as a deposit, could you not consider spending it on something small as a way of getting a foot on the ladder?
Do you mean rent a place to live in?
If you can find somewhere to live and you qualify for benefits you'll get them.
You'll need to register at your local Job Centre and tell them your circumstances.

Yes i mean to rent a flat, my concern is that i have payed no NI or tax in the uk for some years. I also have never claimed any sort of help since i was a teenager more than 30 years ago so i have no knowlege of the system at all.
Sorry, I had assumed you were talking buying.

You should be able to claim income related jobseeker's allowance, and with that comes other benefits, including housing benefit, council tax benefit and possibly child benefit too.

Being on benefits will entitle you a host of other stuff - free prescriptions and dental treatment for a start.

Thank you for your answers, it has helped make me feel less stressed about the whole thing. I appreciate the fast response too i just joined and was not sure what to expect.

This looks like a good site, perhaps i will be able to help somebody myself sometime. ;)
Only problem you have now is finding a landlord that accepts housing benefit claimants......

sorry to put a dampener on things but you may find it difficult

well that is a fair comment, i have been on the net looking at places and i find that their are a lot who say Dss welcome, more than in the past, i imagine it is because of the credit crunch,
a/ landlords are more desperate and b/ even the middle class are finding themsevs on the nipple of the state. only a guess but there do seem to be a lot who say DSS welcome.

I arrive in london tomorrow after 3 years in the wood without cash, i got 35, a good quest for any man, i will let you know how i get on.
