I know you will need a FULL CRB check which you must obtain to even look at children these days.

Basically telephone a local school dealing with your selected age and arrange an appointment.

Initiative will go a long way, trust me.
Either get in touch with the school you went to or one near where you now live. All teachers are overjoyed when they find out someone wants to 'join' their clan! Simply ring up the reception, explain that you want to do a work placement before starting your course and they'll probably already have a system in place for arranging this. Don't worry about the police checks etc - the school will know all about what procedures they will have to go through and will guide you through. Good luck!

Go on the TDA site and look up Teacher taster courses.

Uni's admissions for TT is extremely high and unless you can demonstrate quite a lot of time in a school they are loathe to consider you. Teaching is an extremely taxing and stressful job. It would be very useful to you to spend as much time in a school to decide whether the profession is really for you. As the previous entrants have said just call a school and ask them most will say yes. good luck :-)
