My Employer Said I Now Have To Go Permanent

I have been working for a not-for-profit organisation for the last 10 years on their 'internal agency' for them to save money on high street agencies. They're making cuts now and I now have to become permanent or I go with 4 weeks notice. I love being temporary. I wasn't even looking for any other work as I'd assumed I could carry on working forever like this! I will also have to change my working hours working by two hours later in the afternoon and starting two hours later. It will mean I'll have to come home in the dark now. They want my answer Monday. If I'd known a few months ago, I'd have applied for temp work elsewhere, but applying takes time. What do I do? Temping suits me to a tee.

Nothing is stopping you from taking the permanent job and still look around for another job.

I thought they might have calls from international customers.

That's not how it reads to me.

I can always appeal the hours, but it looks like I'll have to take it permanently as I don't want to be without work, as getting another job takes at least a few months anyway. It's not like I can get hired on the spot like I did in the early 90's. Temp agencies back then took anyone on and I used to get offered 5 temp jobs in a week back then, so I'm so used to temping, ongoing or not.

But you were not 'temping' if you were there for 10 years.

Plus you have been looking for jobs according to half your posts.

"It's not like I can get hired on the spot like I did in the early 90's. Temp agencies"

It was like this until late last year, you could be suddendly out of work or looking for a new job, sign up with a few agencies and get loads of offers but the job market has recently been crushed.

Yes, I'll take it and see how it pans out. My boss said she's wanted me permanently for years and years.

I'm sure it's been answered  but what is this job that you do Treacle? As for your mother, well, it sounds as thought she just likes being annoyed lol!

As your office is open 24/7 you are incredibly lucky that you don't have to do night shifts and weekends.

Even companies that operate 24/7 don't usually have office staff in on the same hours.  Offices normally work an 8 hour day during daytime.

Depends how you define office work.

The emergency services, insurance companies, breakdown services, banks have office based staff working 24/7

Specific services have people manning the phones, yes, but office workers in general don't work shifts 24/7.  I think Treacle said she's a typist.

I also want to thank everyone who answered me. It has certainly given me food for thought. Very helpful, interesting replies. Thank you again xx

Were you the only one in the office between 6 and 8? What time did you start answering the phones?

Question Author

Thank you calmck and DDIL. I put your answers to my mum and she nodded in agreement where I'll heat up my dinner when I get in. I have to meet my manager tomorrow and tell her I'll give it a go and will ask if my early starts could be reconsidered.

That is good nees

Hi Barry. Yes, I'm on my own and don't start the phones until 8. Before this time, I go through all my email queries and do all the admin. The new director came in at 7.15 one morning asking me my hours and I said '6-2' and she said, "That shouldn't be allowed. Who's your manager"? in which I told her. Next thing I have to go permanent 🤷

Question Author

Well, neither manager has asked me my thoughts regarding whether to take the role permanent or not. Shall I wait until they approach me?

If your work does not start till 8am then your director is correct you should not be starting till 8am.

Your admin should be fitted in around calls.

Fundamently if you want to work there then you will do the hours required.

//Shall I wait until they approach me?//

I wouldn't wait.   They're waiting for your response and if you don't respond they're likely to think you're not interested.  I would get it sorted now, then you all know where you stand.
