What was your experience?

The only true sacking was when I was 17 a friend helped me get a job at the place where she worked- they made sandwiches for vending machines. After a few weeks my friend came to my door and gave me a letter saying it was from the manager.

I read it and they basically said they had to let me go as I wasnt making the require number of sandwiches. I told my mum when she got in and first thing she said was 'ooh no, youre just a loser arn't you'. I went upstairs and cried lol

As it really wrecks your confidence I wondered has anyone got similar experiences..

I did a part-time job in a pub where the two bars were joined in a T-configuration.  (So I worked in the up-&-down bit of the 'T', with a colleague working in the across-the-top bit of the 'T').  The landlord and landlady had a strict rule that we two staff weren't allowed to talk to each other.  (Even work-based enquiries, such as "Have you got many pound coins in your till?", weren't permitted).

I was then 'let go' because I £didn't mix with the other staff".

(I'm still trying to work out how I should have 'mixed' without ever speaking.  Perhaps I should seek advice from some Trappist monks?)

Yes, best thing that ever happened to me. Quite the eye opener.

I was once sacked on Christmas eve. I've been sacked three times, and resigned twice.

As a 11 year old I had a paper round - 7 days a week, up at 6 a.m., for 13 shillings.  Went all night fishing one Saturday, overslept, missed the Sunday round and was sacked.  Brutal!

Like you only once when I was 17. I applied in the Spring and was accepted to work at the local cliff top cafe. It was to be in the summer hols from 6th form so I could save up. I worked 2 weeks hard slog really, selling ice-creams etc in the shop first week and then waiting tables and doing the still (the hot water area for teas etc) the second week. After 2 weeks they gave me my wages and said they were letting me go (another girl in my year actually was a regular there and wanted to work the summer again).

Like you maybe I was highly affronted, ashamed to tell family and really upset. It was decades ago and still makes me upset now :-)

Yes. It was what today would be called constructive dismissal. They demoted me on the grounds I wasn't up to the job - what actually happened was I disagreed with my absolutely pathetic manager. How could I remain after that humiliation.

Christmas eve sacking - that sucks. Id go as far as to say there was an element of psychpathy going on there with your boss. Or is the world really this harsh.

Prudie - yea it does feel crap its hard to imagine unless youve been through it for me it was more the confidence thing than financial

Yes, I've been sacked from two pubs for not being chatty enough. I'm fine when it's busy and I can just serve drinks but, on a quiet afternoon and someone comes to sit at the bar to chat... Well, I'm sorry, I can't do that. So, I was 'let go'.
