Can anyone help me with this - my grandson (8 years old) has been classed as not reaching the standard in both Maths and English. I seem to remember someone mentioning to me that if his mother was receiving UC she would be able to use her child care allowance on extra tuition - has anyone got any further advice on this

Many thanks in anticipation

Pretty sure you need to apply through your school or local authority. But I dont think you can beat playing counting games and something like monopoly for counting practise, and plain simple reading or word games
Playing word games is all very well as long as the person playing with the child can spell e.g. knows that there's a difference between piano practice (with a "c") and practising (with an "s") the piano.
Good dig diddlydo... your as bad as fatticus and gulliver with your spelling digs. I'm pretty confident that ric.cor is concerned about the child needing to know more than the difference between your UK spelling and my US spelling of practise.

Sorry Bobbinwales but you're wrong again. US English only uses "practice" with a "c" both as a noun and a verb.
Don't know about Universal credit etc. but at 8 my grandson was behind in maths and English now at 10 he came top at maths. We used maths and English practice books from WHSmith and Amazon for 15 minutes alternating days six days a week with reward chart. It took patience but worked
At 8, time to address this and the school should help. Loads of ways to help at home if parents, and grandparents, have time and patience. As previously posted, books available quite cheaply but also nightly story reading, cooking (maths and english with recipes), looking at anything with words like signs and papers. Grandson may just be a late developer anyway. Mention concerns to his teacher when you get the chance.
Think Diddy referred to US English. They use the S for the noun and the verb, where we use the C for the noun and an S for the verb.
Same with licence and license.
