I have to travel to Stafford which is a return journey of 340 miles. I can claim fuel allowance but they want to know how many litres I am claiming for. I have a little Citroen Berlingo van that probably does around 40 to the gallon on a run, so how many litres should I claim for? I have no idea about litres, I still work in old money.

Thank you. I was hoping nobody would try explaining how to work it out as it would be a complete waste of time!

I agee with 32l although I've never come across a fuel allowance before that isn't paid per mile travelled rather than actual fuel used.
me either prudie
there are 4.54 litres to the gallon, so you get (40/4.54) miles to the litre that's 8.81 miles to the litre 340/8.81 = 38.6litres

Don't know if it makes any difference, but this is for a journey in 2025 - we have to book our dog show judging expenses several years in advance and fill in the form now to claim at the time.

TTT you see my eyes just glaze over even trying to read that.
seems odd you may have another car then with different MPG, or even a lecky jam jar!
that's a big difference between your answer and mine TTT.
I know lankeela doesnt want an explanation but i wonder how we got so different?
i did 340/40 = 8.5 gallons then said to google "how many litres in 8.5 gallons"
Ok first determine how many litres there are in a gallon, that's known to be 4.54 so what ever the amount per gallon is we need to make that into an amount per litre we do that by diving the MPG by 4.54 so 40 divided by 4.54 = 8.81 so for each litre you will get 8.81 miles so now all we need to do is see how many litres we need for the 340 miles. Thus we divide 340 by 8.81 to get 38.6 tada!
aha! i see i have a VPN that answered me in american gallons
Listen to TTT please lankeela
Bednobs, you probably got the US gallon to litre conversion 3.785l per US gallon
Nobs just type 8.5 * 4.54 into google then you get the right answer. It may have defaulted to US gallons for you
incidentally, why on earth do we still talk in MPG when fuel has not been sold in gallons for yonks?
better adjust the BA lanks
//incidentally, why on earth do we still talk in MPG when fuel has not been sold in gallons for yonks?//

Cos litres/km doesn't make much sense to anyone?
but it would if we used it :)
top of my head said 40 litres - better to be on the safe side!
