Not having any children, I had no idea this was still going on.
When I went to secondary school, the school (as did all the schools in the town) had an arrangement with a local clothes shop who had the sole rights to sell the school’s uniform (blazers, ties, gym kit etc). Even at the age of 11, I knew that this arrangement involved an illegal kick-back to the school for giving them the exclusive rights (otherwise why not allow any shop to sell the stuff).

AuntPG. Thank you for posting naff, non-complient links to JUNIOR hats when my grandson in question is 15, over 6 feet tall and £125 is the wholesale price (I think they are about £215 individually.

Roadman, People have mentioned that the school often requires certain articles to have the school logo on, and people buy the clothes with the logo on at an inflated price. Most schools however, offer the logos separately and the parents can sew them on. I'm not sure how many schools offer this service but all the state schools I

The school at which my grandchildren will begin this coming term has a uniform policy even with it's PE kit. I incorrectly stated that the tops were one red and one blue. The polo tops are in fact of a specific make and design, predominantly black with a red sash down either side, tapering toward the waist. This sash has yellow piping bordering it. The socks are similar, as are the shorts, though if they prefer, the girls can wear the skorts. Trainers can be worn, but must be predominantly black or white and must not be branded. This uniform is available at just 3 outlets.

I would really like to see a breakdown of the costs the Childrens society declare as an average uniform for a Primary school child at
£ 315. They have obviously picked the most expensive off the shelf items, and coupled them with the items that have to be bought from a school supplier -all, I guess, for Political reasons.

christ, i just looked at the website for the school supplier for the secondary school. i just picked the middle sizes of everything and the trousers, blazer, and pe kit (no shoes or anything such as blouses/football shorts that can be bought in the supermarket) and it came to about £150. That's just 1 set - probably going to need at least 2 sets. looks like ill be buying second hand or getting my protesting boots on. perhaps the 300 includes shoes and more than 1 of everything apg?
