Can a colleague/line manager who works in the same office space as you do your work appraisal? Not been there long and she gets on my nerves. Loud, disruptive ie when on the phone she will interrupt ur conversation and it’s so annoying. I’ve done this job before, but as I’m new I am learning the ropes in this certain environment. It doesn’t mean she undermines me because she’s in charge. I’m not enjoying my time there one bit.

Who would you expect to appraise your work if not your Line Manager?

If she interrupts you, what reasons does she give, is she trying to help you by being constructive?

If you're unhappy, why not bring up your concerns at the appraisal?
of course they can. how else would they know how you were doing unless they worked with you??

I thought the department manager would do appraisals.
You thought wrong.
In most organisations the immediate line manager undertakes formal appraisals and counselling. That person may be co-located or not. It depends on the organisation. When properly managed there should be no surprises in an appraisees report. Appraisal should be an ongoing process with the formal appraisal merely a written summary of that process.
I have not been in the work-force for many years and have no idea what a line-manager is. For many years I worked in a laboratory and it was divided into various departments with each department having a Department Head and it was he or she who evaluated performances. Therefore, I can understand, in a way, phleb's concern. (By the way, are you a phlebotomist?)
It is surely inevitably one's immediate boss who is in a position to, and needs to judge how well one is doing. But if they don't already know and have fed back over the year then there's a failure anyway. Which indicates what a waste of time appraisals are. Just a miserable experience inflicted on those below by those above, which few like to be involved in. Yay for retirement and freedom from such awful things. Folk can now know what they can do with their warped opinion of me.
On my last job the line manager did the appraisal interview and immediate colleagues each contributed a written appraisal. We all worked together in an open office. I didn't mind being the subject but didn't like doing appraisals - one of the reasons I never pushed for a management role.
