/// 'With right-wing politicians across the world scapegoating migrants, refugees and others for their economic problems, we are seeing a deeply worrying rise in the politics of hate. ///

/// 'We must make clear that there is no place for anti-foreigner myths, racism and hate in our society.' ///

Fine words, but are they the answer, should crimes committed by migrants be varnished over, so as to not encourage hate crime?

Is it not correct that the increase in migrants, refugees and others has caused economic problems?

As last night was Saturday night I imagine there were scores of serious assaults up and down the country (there are plenty on Sunday to Friday as well). I've not read about any of them but I'd be surprised if there were none other than the one mentioned here. The one mentioned here hits the headlines because the allegation, so we're told, is that the victim was an...

//Diane Abbott blames Tory government ...//

So what's new? The woman is a ghastly, self-serving hypocrite.
What happened to this lad was entirely reprehensible.

It would appear to have all the hallmarks of a race-hate crime, and if that is so, then it should be condemned without any ifs, and, or buts.

Quite right, Mikey. A dreadful crime and not something to manipulate to try to score political points.
don't care for the woman to be honest, but all crimes
should be dealt with including this one, which as you say was reprehensible.

Make sure the attackers were white lads before getting too carried away.

I can't open the article for some reason ( probably my device) however some general though come to mind.
Right wing politicians by their very nature tap into the nationalistic tendencies of the community. It's nice to like things about your country, it's great even to think that you live in the best country in the whole world. What isn't nice is that once you do think that it's quite a short hop for some people to assume they are amongst the best people in the world, which in turn leads to a feeling of superiority. Whenever you get this there are hate crimes, when things in society aren't as sparkly as the nationalists believe they should be. It's nice to have someone to blame who isn't you, and race, religion, colour or culture is an obvious target then.
We should indeed make sure there is no place for racism or xenophobia in society.
No, crimes committed by immigrants should not be varnished over, and should be dealt with in the same way we would deal with any other member of society.
No it is not correct that the increase in refugees and migrants has caused economic problems.
Well said kvalidir !
What Ms Abbott has said is laudable and I can't think of anyone who would disagree with her.

Whoever these vile lowlives are, I hope that if convicted they get nice long sentences. This would appear to be attempted murder at this point.

AOG - furthermore, you correctly pointed out that I should be careful in critiquing others' use of words earlier today, so I will make no mention that you've used the word 'varnish' entirely incorrectly.

I will avoid telling you that varnishing something does not disguise it, because varnish is see-through. In fact, varnishing something allows it to remain visible for a lot longer.

It should be condemned whatever the reason, but we know very little of what actually happened, or the cause or even the nationality of the attackers, so until we do, can we please address what Diane Abbott had to say?

Even Mr Barwell, the Conservative Housing Minister and MP for Croydon Central, doesn't knopw what is going off:

/// "It's an appalling crime and I hope the people responsible are caught quickly and receive the full force of British justice." ///

Excuse me Mr Barwell but they have already been caught.

I was about to award you the BA, but then I read your last paragraph.

Mass migrants/immigration/refugees have caused some economic problems.

my use of the word varnish was quite correct:

To put on that glossy, protective covering.

Really???????????

How come you qualify your position on this attack with talk about not knowing the cause, but on this racist attack, even though witnesses have explained what happened?

You approach seems very different to this kind of attack, then the victim is white.

omg...this is terrible..crime is crime regardless of race or creed.. and needs to be dealt with by the full arm of the law...

I'm afraid I don't know anyone who thinks there's a place for racism and hate in our society.

Perhaps there are those amongst us who wish to encourage such attitudes, but I'm not a friend of (or an apologist for) such people.
Minty....yes, of course it should. And if it does turn out to be a hate crime, then the Police and the CPS should proceed as such.
indeed such thuggery cannot be tolerated !!
ANOTHEOLDGIT, the MP's comments were made in the afternoon and the suspects weren't arrested until the evening.
