I thought about putting this in TV, but I might (repeat, "might") get more sensible answers here.

Whenever we see two-man/woman CID teams on TV, there seems to be little difference between the rankings of the two other than the fact that the senior one is usually more experienced and is the one who calls the shots. They usually seem to be DS/DI teams, with the DCs doing most of the boring donkey work and the DCIs being the desk men/women who have to report to the very top.

But there has to be more to it than that. I can appreciate there has to be a little more supervisory work with each promotion, CID or otherwise, but what are the basic differences in role between the ranks?

I had to refer through to the uniformed rankings to to found out more than I already knew. Seems the main difference is what they can authorise or sanction at each level. Thanks for that Baldric.
