Sending out general CVs

I'm going to be sending out general CVs to places soon to find a job for the summer. I know beggers shouldn't be choosers but I'll send out two lots, first to nautical places and a couple of cafes who I know people that work at. I'll wait a week or two and if there's no reply then I'll send my cv to other cafes and shops . . .

Has anyone else had experience of sending out a load of CVs? how many did you have to give out before you got a reply or even better, a job?

You'll need to send out a hell of a lot of CVs just to get an aknowledgement. I think you would be better going to the place as soon as it opens and enquiring. If you go at opening time they won't be so busy and it shows you can get up in the morning.

Personal enquries top out over random CV's any time.

It shows initiative, and a wilingness to be proactive - two attitudes employers like.

The majority of 'standard' CV's will go in the bin, unread.

Should I take the time to edit them slightly so they are aimed at the company rather than dear sir/ madam . . . ?

Yes that's why I asked if i should make the CVs more specific seeing as I might not be able to visit them.

I have sent out loads of CVs for very few replies. If you can visit places and hand them in all the better. You could phone some of the places up and ask. CVs that look as if they are aimed just for the company, look better.

As andy, wisely, says...........often a CV received through the post will immediately end up in the bin.
Print out several CVs and spend a day going round town visiting places which you may be interested in working at. Go in, have a chat and leave your CV for them to look at. It will be better for them and you because they can tie a face/person to a CV.

The scatter-gun ,ail-shot approach seldom results in a satisfactory result.

it beggars belief that you "might not be able to visit" these places when you want to work there on a (presumably) regualr basis

Pinki, I'd be able to get there at the weekend, but not during the week and seeing as it's already easter I want them sent out asap.
