New Job Dilemma

I have been offered a job with a company which I have accepted and I'm due to start on the 18th of this month, in the mean time I have had an interview with a different company, whom I would prefer to work for, I had a 2nd interview for them today and they said they would let me know early next week. If I was offered the 2nd job I would want to let the 1st company know as soon as possible and ideally give them a weeks notice. I'm wondering if I could e-mail the 2nd company and mentioned I've had another offer and ask if they could possible me me know earlier, but I'm concerned this will come across as too pushy. Any suggestions?

oooo tough one, a bird in the hand and all that, plus the 2nd company might think you are a time waster. I'd keep to the first plan for now and see if a firm offer is forthcoming from job 2
What a lucky dilemma in this day and age. I would say that you have no obligation to the first company. Obviously it would be annoying for them to have to start interviewing or offer to someone not as good as you. I agree that it would sound pushy to ask for an earlier answer. Let sleeping dogs lie would be my advice. Just tell the first company as soon as you can. Good luck for the future whatever you decide :)

The 1st company I know fairly well already, and know if I did turn it down I would be burning a few bridges, but the 2nd one would offer me more in the long run
[I've applied to so many jobs, its nice to be offered something and get a come back interview as well]
But remember the proverb about the dog going across the bridge over the river with a bone in his mouth, he saw another dog under the bridge with a bigger bone, dropped his to take the one off the other dog, and it was just his own reflection. Be very careful that you don't shoot yourself in the foot.

(It's proverb night on AB I think!)

Thanks Dotty. The 2nd one is less pay but permanant, the 1st one is more but only for a year, the sector I'm in is going through huge changes with lots of funding cuts and funding not coming through, so any job is better than no job.
I'll be patient and wait...
id say nothing...it might make them remove the offer thinking you are not dedicated etc
bimbo123456 - "I would say that you have no obligation to the first company."

Apart from the fact that the OP has accepted a job with them, therefore entering into a contract? I'd say that was an obligation, wouldn't you?

I havent signed a contract yet but do have one ready to take in with me if I start, I have only verbally accepted.
That's still a contract, graffiastar - they now expect you to start,.they will have told the other applicants that they haven't got the job. IMO.
