My husband gets paid every other Thurs which would be in 2 days but they just informed him at the end of the day today that they will not be getting paid til the 1st which is 5 days later than he was supposed to be getting paid. Can they change a pay period 2 days before they were supposed to be getting it legally?

I'm not certain of the legal position but my guess is that they have to give more notice- in line with the contractual notice period- for a change like this.
If things are as you describe it is certainly very poor practice by the employer. Is your hussband certain this change hasn't been communicated previously?
What size firm is it? Is there a union?
I think your husband should go back and tell his employer that because they've been doing it for the last x years, it has become an implied term and condition of his employment and they can't just go changing it willy-nilly. As an absolute minimum they need to give him his contractual notice period (basically one weeks notice for each completed year of employment, minimum one one, maximum of 12)
Changes to T&Cs should be put in writing to each employee - so don't let get away with any old bull about 'oh, we told everyone last month about it. Poor management indeed.
