You need to match the skills and experience you have against the ones being described in the job description/person specification, so I would suggest that you say "the skills and experience which I have which I feel are relevant to the role are: then you can bullet point each skill and describe how it fits the described description (or say you would need more training in order to fit any particular requirements)
Question Author
there is no job description/person spec, thats why im asking on here as to the best way to word it, its for a petrol forecourt with a shop
Question Author
Thanks boxtops
Ah, I see - in which case then yes, I would write out your skills and relevant experience (customer skills, accuracy with money, dealing with difficult people)and say how your experiences suit you for working in this particular post.
DC - so it's customer skills, reliability etc that you need to bias towards IMO - Have you visited garage?
Question Author
yes ive been there numerous times, i have the experience, i just wasnt sure best way to word the first sentence,
"I believe that I would be suitable for this post because I have the followig skills and experience..."
Question Author
thanks boxtops
Good luck - let us know how you get on!
what a then put bullet points? To start letter after headings - say where your saw advert so something like
Dear Mr/ Mrs xxx
I saw your advert looking for ???? I would like to apply for this post. I believe I can forfill the role because ...... then you tell them why

not the best but some other AB'ers will do better - hand written is better - if not make sure you do spell check
You're thinking along the same lines as me, tony.
Question Author
hand writing is only way to do it as its a paper form. Tony its not a cover letter though.
DC - put covering letter with it though along the lines of please find enclosed my application for xyz then say a bit more about yourself and why you want to work for them & what you can give them - going the extra mile will put you at top off pile
Question Author
but would it harm my chances, would they think "oh whats this, we didnt ask for this" i understand what your trying to say,
DC - as with any job application, you are trying to get an interview. IMO a covering letter will do you no harm - see what others think.
Question Author
Ive just never done it before, i do see the point though
I agree with tony, a covering letter gives a good impression. I would say something along the lines of "please see attached my application form for the post of xxx". As you will see from the form, I have experience in XXX due to three years working in xxx (or whatever), and hope to be able to bring this experience and skills to working for your organisation. I look forward to receiving your reply in due course."
box - think we are thinking along same lines. DC - you are lucky to be able to draw upon these resources, do heed the advice given.
Let us know if you get interview.
Question Author
boxtops so would i put in the box marked relevant skills and experience "please see attached my application form for the post of xxx"
No, certainly not - you need to list your skills and experience in the box on the application form, but refer to them (summarise them) in the letter. The whole point of the application form is that the company compares like for like when looking at everyone's applications - but the letter can be the icing on the cake where you introduce yourself. This bit from my earlier post is for the covering letter ONLY:
please see attached my application form for the post of xxx". As you will see from the form, I have experience in XXX due to three years working in xxx (or whatever), and hope to be able to bring this experience and skills to working for your organisation. I look forward to receiving your reply in due course."
