if you learn the language and hear it all day with nothing else then I found that I learnt very quickly, I learnt Danish in a couple of months and was fluent by the time I left after 18 months.

Many thanks for this answer I do really appreciate hearing from someone with this successful experience ... can you also tell me something about your enculturation Did that help with value judgements, and in speech idiom/dialect etc?
I was told that I had a Copenhagen accent, in the end I spoke the language nearly all the time purely because although the friends I had there could speak english they didnt, because they knew I could understand and speak danish with them.
So I would say that it was well worth going and learning it there, in effect I pretty much became danish.
