hi, there are two parts to an exam first is worth 60% of overall mark and he passed with 62%
the second part is worth 40 % of overall mark and he got 65%
What is the final mark please?

100% pass!
(0.62x0.6) + (0.4 x0.65)
63.3%
Without a calculator the answer is always going to be between 62% and 65% and will be nearer 62% as the first paper had a higher weighting
I did it the way FF did

thaks FF, i was just saying to him as he was grumbling about not being able to work it out "i'll ask on ab, there's a nice maths teacher on there"
For consistency and to get the answer rin percentage format I should have set it out as
(62x0.6) + (65 x0.4)
Typo from FF who will know it's 63.2%
Thanks bednobs. Yes there are some nice maths teachers on AB but it seems Buenchico and Prudie aren't around
Bednobs, I have just your op properly. I initially thought it was your daughter's maths homework.
Ah- Prudie is around. Well spotted - yes it's 63.2%. I think though that as the others were perhaps rounded figures we should settle on 63%

Thanks bednobs. I'm treated with disdain and ridicule by some on here when i venture into News so it's nice to be made to feel welcome for posting here.

ps ff, just dont go in there then
It was a 'pass' wasn't it?
It's supposed to be good for you to venture out of your "comfort zone".
FF anyone who venture into News is liable to be treated with disdain if there views don't fit. Take no notice.
Maybe I'm being too pedantic, but bednobs asked what is the final score? Wouldn't the answer be 63? I'm assuming that they don't give marks to the first decimal point.
yes, probably sanmac- see post at 19:16
