The IOM isn't in the EU.
It doesn't have an open doors policy - you can't work without a work permit, and it's not easy to get one.
You can't get benefits unless you've lived there for 5 years.
Unemployment is about 1.5% (yes, one and a half percent), and has been falling .

Their Government hasn't been borrowing & spending like the UK, so the global recession has missed that part of the globe.

There isn't a massive army of paper shufflers.
Do you think they're doing something right?

If you have skills they need, why not have a bash?

We're off for a job interview - wish us luck!

Almost, but it's a Crown Dependency - any UK citizen can go & live there and buy property.
Without a job, and no entitlement to benefits, you would have to be self supporting, as you suggest!
You need a work permit to be self employed, too!
