Huge Increase In Numbers Without Motor Insurance

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

There has been a 40 per cent increase in the number of drivers without motor insurance in London in just two years, the London Liberal Democrats have announced.

Nationally, the numbers caught without motor insurance have increased by around 20 per cent. The Liberal Democrats described the increase as a "major social, legal and criminal problem".

"Loss of life or injury through a road accident is traumatic in itself, but to then discover that the perpetrator has no motor insurance to provide redress must be unbearable," the transport spokesman commented.

The motor insurance industry has blamed the rise in an overall increase in driving costs such as petrol and road tax and, until recently, a lack of effective measures against drivers without motor insurance.

Drivers without motor insurance cover are nine times more likely to be involved in an accident and ten times more likely to have a drink driving conviction.

Drivers without motor insurance cover also increase the costs of the average motor insurance quote by £30, as the cost of any damage they cause has to be covered by the motor insurance cover of legal drivers.
