Usually you get compensation if you have sustained any injury. Someone pulled out and hit my sister in law a few months back, she said she had whiplash, got something in writing from the hospital to say she had sustained 'soft tissue damage to the neck' and was awarded 1800.
Definately not a waste of time filling in the forms, but you don't say if you had any injuries or sufferred any other finacial loss (assuming your insurance company will pick up the tab for the car).
Damages fall into 2 categories: 'general' where a certain amount is specified for the majority of injuries (e.g, "your broken arm is worth 2k"), and 'specific', covering actual losses, e.g, as a result of the accident you lost x amount in wages / overtime / hospital parking charges etc etc.
If you were uninjured & sufferred no loss, then you shouldn't expect to be compensated, despite the 'blame & claim' culture we live in.
If you were / have, keep receipts & seek legal advice.
btw, dont expect it to be sortd out quickly. MR bednobs was knocked off his motorbike and had some injuries (wrist and whiplash type injury) and got 2000 quid but it took 3 years
My Sister in law got hers after 3 months.
