Has Anyone Heard Of A Company Called Keycare?

I got a letter out of the blue fully addressed to me with my correct name with a key fob serial number saying a member of the public approached them with a lost key of mine. They're asking me to take out key insurance with them so it doesn't happen again. However, I haven't lost a key. Could this be a scam? And why couldn't this 'lost key' be posted out to me?

I would phone them on 0345 303 4028 .  Ask how they got your details as you've never been a customer of theirs and you haven't lost a key. Tell them to remove your details from their database.

I had Keycare many years ago, it was a freebie with an insurance policy.  I had brass keyfobs with a serial number - if any found them they could post the keys to the address on the fob and the serial number would identify me.  It's a reputable company and has a good rating on Trust Pilot

I can't imagine how they would identify your keys without the fob.  It seems very fishy to me.

Thank you, Barry. I feel weirded out by it tbh.

Think of the logic. If a member of the public (you for example) found a key would the first move be to approach a company most people have never heard of? Shred the letter.

Thank you, people. I'll take your advice 👍

Prudie - the logic is sound. You find a bunch of keys with a fob attached. The fob contains a message to the effect of "If you have found these keys please post them to the Freepost address below". Keycare then see the reference number on the fob and return them to you.

The logic is not sound at all. Treacle said they found a 'key' not a key with a fob number and if they in fact found a key with a fob number linked to Keycare then Keycare wouldn't be asking the owner to take out insurance with them becasue clearly they are already a customer...

Question Author

Absolutely, Prudie.

Bhg, but treacle's key (if it existed) wouldn't have that fob on it.  She's not signed up to the service.   This is just an advertising mail shot - best binned.

Keycare has over 2m customers in the UK, it is promoted by many insurance companies.  They don't just return found keys, they provide cover for replacement locks and locksmiths, for buildings and vehicles.  It's a reputable company which is why I would contact them.  If somebody is scamming people using their name, they need to know.

Thank you. Very helpful answers x

They don't advertise like that.  If they receive a key and fob after your policy has expired they will write and ask you to pay for the return of the key, or renew and they will return the key for free.

If it is a new marketing ploy, it's shonky and badly advised

Prudie - I was saying the general principle of the Keycare system is sound, not this particular incident, which is not. A bunch of keys can be very expensive to replace (I've just paid £30 for 1 spare key for my front door); if you're a careless person key insurance could be worthwhile.
