Do I Really Need To Have Had A Pre-Booked Flight?

I was on a placement in Hong Kong which is supposed to end in May. In November, I had to book a flight asap and leave on the same day - there was hardly any transport, no food deliveries and my residence shut down within 24 hrs and kicked me out in one day without notice - I had no choice but to leave while I could. The insurance people now say that 'I didn't have a return ticket booked beforehand' and the cost of the ticket is what I would have paid anyway. The fact that my placement was due to end in May is apparently irrelevant. This sounds like a ridiculous excuse considering the price difference of hundreds of dollars, or am I wrong? How would you argue and is there a way to prove that there was a difference or whom else can I ask please?

Thank you so much.

what do your insurance t and c's say?
to be clear, the only money you have lost is the difference between the fare price you would have paid if you had pre booked and the actual price you paid to turn up and fly........did the insurance you had cover you against your placement ending early?
Also the insurance company have no way of being sure that you would have prebooked a flight have they? I mean you might just have done turn up and fly anyway. I think you are on a loser here.
I'm struggling to work out what contingency you were actually insured against (if any). I think we need some more information here.
