hi, it is a bit complicated, my husbands credit rating is bad, he needed a car and his friend agreed to buy a car on his name and my husband is paying the finance.
Now before they left Arnold Clark where they bought the car, the salesperson told them they need to put the friends name on the insurance as well as my name and my husbands. and we did but it is quite expensive to add him.
Now car insurance is up for renewal and im thinking, is it required by law for this guy to be on our insurance, he is not driving the car at all, only me and my husband. but this guy is the owner as logbook is on his name. and finance is on this guys name.
thank you for taking time to read, hoping to hear good news.

Can you clarify the nature of the finance. If it is a hire purchase agreement, the actual ownership of the car is with the HP finance company, & the name of the person who put up the finance is irrelevant. In this situation I would be pretty sure there is no reason at all for the friend's name to be on the insurance, or on the log book. The log book is not a record of ownership - just of the keeper of the car.

If the finance is not HP then the friend owns the car - & the sale invoice will (or should) have been made out to him. It may then be that his name should be on the insurance - perhaps someone with more knowledge can comment.
if the log book is in friends name i would keep his name on policy as insurance companies will try any excuse to get out of paying out on claims, and if an accident happens or routine stop, police may start to ask questions.
The fact that your friends name is on the logbook doesn't mean he is the owner only the registered keeper. Two different things.
If only you and you husband are the only drivers insure it in your names only.
Whooops. On checking, I may have given the wrong advice. Read this: https://www.askthe.police.uk/content/Q743.htm
