I need to replace my faulty car key which operates the central locking, alarm and mobiliser. Going to a franchise dealer can be in excess of £100, What options do I have? Are there any sources who can either repair or reproduce the key(s) cheaper?

What is the model of your car? I just dip in and out of Ab so perhaps others can help.
You could try googling remote control car keys. I think there are some sites that could supply one. You put in the make and model of your car etc. Worth a try. Good luck
I don't think there is any alternative. When I tried to get a second key they charged for 3 separate items.

1) they need to get hold of the key number sometimes on the fob.
2. The actual cost of the key
3. An engineer has to set the new key up with your engine management system which usually means a trip to the dealers.

I managed to escape the first item by ringing the garage that sold the car to previous purchase and they had the number on their computer. They would not give the number to me obviously but gave it to my dealer.

The costs involved for the 3 items were approx

1. £30
2. £20
3. £40

As my car was bottom of the range it could be a lot more than this.
You won't get an answer if you keep your car details secret and make everyone guess!
i went to an independent key cutter, the nearest who could do this, just outside Hull ( a round trip on 87 miles) but only cost me £45 for a new key cut and reset everything on the car
job very well done

Thanks for all the answers. My car is a Porsche 911 Carrera (996 model)
That will be VW parts then.

Get original and save the hassle of outside-sourced items that do/will not work for long.
nice one fella but if your running a porches i wouldn't think £100+ would be a problem lol
Don't take any notice jwong, there's always one.

Thanks Chrissa that nice of you and I appreciate that.
I am a petrolhead first and I have always wanted a 911. I thought one day I will get myself a 911, an 80's model but I couldn't afford that. Then came the 964, still out of my league, then the gorgeous 993 and 996. I spent quite a while deliberating which one to get and by the time I decided the prices had fallen, I took a leap of faith. Generally its been reliable but the keys are a pain.
I try to save as much as I can by trying to find ways of running the car more economically but it still has a FSH. It is amazing how much Porsche parts are, but there are huge savings on consumables which so far work just as well. Other cars which frequently are unreliable or depreciate heavily are more expensive to run than the 911.
Hi Deggers, Who is the key cutter in Hull please? I asked for a quote on a 911 key and it was about £130 so I thought I would look around first.
There are a number of replacement key cutters...take your pick

C'mon Deggers, spill.
Having a non VW / Porsche key may affect the saleability and therefore value of your car. I would be very wary, as would a dealer, about buying a highly stealable vehicle with a non genuine key.

Thank you Deggers for the contact I will ring them and see what they can do. I will do the Googling to.
Also try JP Locksmiths up near malton if you are that region
Loads more further south

Main dealer is quoting £330 for 2 keys (doesn't include the blade)
Question Author
Tried a number of non main dealers including those suggeted on this posting none were able to help. The demand is too low for this type of vehicle to warrant setting up the facility.
