Are you sure its a powerpoint file as 2007 is backward compatible with all the versions produced.

Is there an error message? What is the file extension?

yes errror mesage says Powerpoint can't open the type of file represented c:\user\desktop\blandtemplate.ppt ( Think it is from 97-2003powerpoint but mine is 2007. Thanks for your help so far guys
SometimesI get a powerpoint file which hasn't been saved as presentations, it is just the file. Unless you have the actual powerpoint program rather than just the player, it won't play.
The only problem I can see is if the file was saved in a version earlier than Powerpoint 97. Powerpoint 2007 won't be able to open this.

Try creating a new Powerpoint presentation and select the option to insert slides from the one on your desktop.

if this does not work, try ask someone who has a version earlier than 2007. They should be able to open it.
the 2007 version should open the 97-03 saved version. Their may be some limits on the animation or font types but it should open.
