Take the battery out, wrap it in kitchen towel and then put it in a tub full of unboiled rice (don't seal the tub) and then leave it in a warm place for about 48 hours before trying it again.

how much would a new battery cost ? would it work again with a new battery or does the whols thing have to dry out ? I am going on a two hour train journey tomorrow with hubby hwo is reg blind and I have to let the people know the other end when we get there, couldnt have happened at a worse time.

Whilst I'm not a registered mind-reader, I think Chuck is suggesting to try and dry the phone out completely before deciding whether it is a basket-case. One doesn't do that with the battery in place. It's the electronics itslef that need to be properly dried. There is no certainty that this will work so if a phone is a must for tomorrow, I'd be off buying a new one today.
You can put it in a smaller container just make sure the phone is covered totally and do remove the battery, the idea is that the dry rice draws the moisture out of the phone and absorbs it (like those little pouches of silica gel you find in new things)

A new battery will make no difference (in fact the battery itself is probably waterproof so hasn't even got any water in it)

If you have a larger tescos near to you with an electrical department some of them are selling emergancy phones for about £10 (if I recall right) which will work with any sim card or if not most large supermarkets will sell you a cheap phone for about £20-30, though you may have to use the sim card that comes with the phone and put some credit on it.
Yep Chuck....£10 Nokia. OH got one after he dropped his phone in the bath.
Also....If you get a tesco sim on PAYG they are doing triple credit. So top up £10 and they give you £30...
all stations have phone boxes
I've just re-read my first answer and it's not very clear......

Just to clarify I meant take the battery out and wrap the phone in kitchen towel and put the phone in rice, not put the battery in rice.
Bednobs....that's just too bloody obvious...lol
One of mine I dropped in a glass of water and I read on here to put in in salt and rice in a box and in a warm place ., It worked with mine.

Hi Chuckfins
I put the phone and the battery seperately but in the rice, have now taken the battery out ! thanks and thanks to all others for their input.I will let you knowe if it works.
Yes all stations do have phone boxes if they work and are not vandalised in Darsham, but the idea was to ring ahead so they could pick us up and not have to pay silly parking prices in the car park.

Hate to say this but if the phone has actually been through a wash, ie with detergent in a washing machine, rather than just dropped in water the chances of it ever working again are very close to zero.
The detergent makes the water ''wetter'' so that it penetrates the items in the wash and removes all the dirt, it will have got into the inner workings of the phone and caused short circuits on the circuit chips.
DeeSa - Rather than put your efforts (and faith) into trying to save your 'phone, I would suggest that as time is now critical, you follow the good advice of others and pick-up a cheap PAYG to get you through tomorrow.

You can always tell your hubby that the 'phone has developed an irritating glitch and you want to be safe and sure tomorrow............

I have confessed, he was okay says I can use one of his phones and a very good friend is going to see if he has an old phone with big numbers [ otherwise I cant text]
to make matters worse I put conditioner in the wash too, it never rains but it pours, but so nice that so many people have taken the time to help me.
Thank you all
Dee
You talk about a phone (mobile) with big numbers, my eyesight is not soo good what mobiles have big no/s then.? Thanks.

It may not work any more, but I bet it is lovely and soft to the touch, and smells nice and fresh.

Panic Button you have made me laugh for the first time today.
I had/have an LG phone with decent size numbers/digits on it so I can text ,with those little tiddly ones my thumbs are too big and I keep pressing the wrong button, my LG was bought by my son for Mothers Day a year ago, so if it doesnt work[ dont hold out too much hope] I truly hope I can get the same model as it seemed to be "idiot proof" just up my street.
omorrow is my birthday hubby said he will buy me another phone as my present., I dont really celebrate birthdays anymore too old to care.
Enjoy your evening everyone
Dee
its unlikely as its been soaked for a while rather than just dropped...

saying that mine sat in apool of split water an it now works...howver you have to NOT even try to turn it on while still wet or even damp - dry it completely for days an you never know...
