Water cut off here this morning - can someone advise what this means for my gas fired central heating. I presume there will be a problem if the water in the cylinder which is heated by the GFCH empties - but what about before that - Should the heating be used at all?

I speak as an ordinary guy so no expert

There will be a water pressure sensor in the boiler which will mean it will not fire up if the pressure is zero. So no hot water or heating
The central heating is a closed circuit and doesn't take water from the mains, it makes no difference if your water is off or not to the heating.

the water in the tank is the hot water for the taps etc and has no connection to the central heating, you should be able to turn the hot water off and leave the heating on.
