Vodka. soak for 5 minutes, dry off, and polish with a soft cloth. PS. Don't drink the vodka afterwards. :-)

I would never have thought of Vodka.

Many thanks Schutzengel.
meths
I use brown sauce.
Coca cola - cheaper than vodka!
Postdog....that's sun tan lotion, dafty.

Meths (cant spell it all) evaporates leaving any stones crystal clear & metals sparkling. And you can swig it after use - much cheaper than vodka!

Many thanks every one, Meths sounds best to me.
Coca cola is fine for plain gold rings, but if any of the rings have gem stones, the coca cola can loosen them, whereas any good spirit won't. Never, ever immerse a ring with an opal. If the ring has an opal, just clean the gold part of the ring, very carefully with a soft cloth dipped in a suitable spirit, making sure it doesn't touch the opal, same goes for pearls.
leave to soak in gin for a couple of hours then buff with a lint free cloth after

Schutzengel. Thanks for the advice about opals. My wife has an Opal broach and it would have gone in the spirit with rest of the thing without your advice.
When I worked in a jewellers we used a Sonic Cleaner, the ONLY thing we used was distilled water(or tap water at a pinch)
I am assuming by Sonic Cleaner you mean small square container that you fill with liquid, which then vibrates like mad?
If you put any of the suggestions above into a Sonic Cleaner it could be dangerous!

The instructions for our shop cleaner stipulated distilled water only.
It's cheaper anyway LOL
Woops! sorry didn't read the question properly, I though you meant a container. I use an egg cup. There's no need for anything else.
