does anyone know whether it's possible to buy and print stamps from the Royal Mail website?

yep, been using it for months..you can print direct on an envolope or on lables (which i use)..if you do mess the printing up you can print as many times as you like ! They must be posted within 24hrs of printing again if you do come up with a problem and dont get it posted you can get a refund just takes a week or so..to be honest its pretty foolproof you will need some accurate scales though if more than just a standard letter
the only issue i had was with a recorded/registered letter which again can all be done on line but the local village P.O. got a bit funny about it when i asked them to aknowledge the proof of sending without me purchasing the stamps from them..not quite sure they were up to date with the latest technology, confused them a bit ,' bless em'
It's very easy to use, and very convenient, especially for sending letters abroad, where one is unlikely to have the right value of stamps.

For weighing, with a balance, coins are useful eg:

5p - 3�25g
20p - 5g
10p - 6�5g
50p - 8g
�1 - 9�5g
�2 - 12g
