The details you give are too vague to provide a definite answer, and if in ANY doubt seek advice from a local appliance repair shop.
The majority of vac motors are brush type.Any capacitor in circuit probably a suppressor. If it IS an induction motor consult a local electrician. If the switch has 4 terminals probably a two pole type In that case live & neutral to one side of the switch, the motor leads connect to the other side.If only 2 terminals on switch then it would be single pole,in which case the live lead switched and the neutral direct to motor. But as above cannot be more specific

Sorry if I misled you a bit ,but the switch I have no problem with its just a make and break on the live side. It,s the motor which has 3 terminals its a miele induction but I think or thought that somehow it had to be kick started too go the correct way round or am I thinking of a zener diode or something.
hi rayman I cant tell you the value of the cap you need (get in touch with melie) but I can tell you how to wire it if you have a multimeter
Question Author
Yes I have a DVM.
hi rayman what you need to do is measure the resistance between the terminals - you should get three different values
The lowest reading you get is your main winding ,the middle reading is the start winding and the highest reading should be the sum of the first two ie the two windings in series
the capacitor will connect across the the highest resistance ie the two coils in series
the live and neutral will connect across the main winding ie the lowest reading
it doesn't really matter which way round live and neutral go but neutral is usually on the common leg (usually marked u2)
hope this helps
