Anyone know how this thing (pain in the @rse, BTW!) actually works? How does the website know what random number it has just given you?

Well, how could it give you a random number UNLESS it knew what it was? Duh

It's not a random number - it's calculated by an algorithm, one of the terms of which is the date/time. Both ends know the algorithm and should therefore calculate the same value
