they usually have a valve that only lets air through in one direction. When you pull the handle out, air gets into the chamber. When you press the handle, the pressure in the opposite direction shuts the valve and air is forced out of the end.

Not good enough physics girl.Non return valve is obvious but how does the air get into a sealed chamber in the first place?
If it wasn't sealed then the air would escape on the downward plunge
Physics girl - I'd tell him to go and shove a pump where the sun doesnt shine for such a rude reply.

It's not rocket science and if you need to ask a question which you are obviously intelligent enough to work out the answer for yourself then you are better off googling or wikipedia searching for your answer.

Derr - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_pump

Bicycle pumps come in a variety of styles and operational configurations. Operating instructions are typically enclosed within or printed on the packaging that accompanies the pump when purchased. Store personnel where the pump was purchased will sometimes assist with training in the use of a pump you purchased from them and may even provide a demonstration, especially if you are an obviously friendly thoughtful caring generous giving person . . . like Physicsgirl.

just as i thought. No one knows how the air gets in the chamber.
Ps. why do you think I'm a male?
Hmm, i don't think you are, zingo.
Imagine that the blue stuff is air.
