My Mum (in her 60s) wants to buy a laptop. It will not get heavy use - mainly a bit of on line banking, checking emails and managing her ipod.

To start with she will be on dial up, but hopes to move to broadband in a couple of months time (when free Sky Broadband gets to our area).

Can anyone suggest what spec / where there are good deals at the moment? Many thanks

Windows Vista is coming out at the end of January to replace Windows XP.

This means there are a lot of good deals at the moment in the lull before Vista arrives (plus it is post Christmas)

To be honest ANY current laptop would be good enough for what she wants to do.

I have bought Dell a few times and they have always been reliable and I got a delivery in a few days.

They only sell over the web:

Thanks - I have been looking at the Dell website and there appears to be a pretty good one for 388.
Dell are fine until something goes wrong and I am sorry but I have heard more things going wrong then going right.

You pay for what you get with computers. Personally, I wouldnt touch any computer which runs a celeron processor, they spend more time falling over then standing up.

I have bought from PC World because I can at least go into the shop and have a face to face conversation with someone if it goes wrong. Unfortunately most of Dell's customer services are based abroad.

For a little bit more money - you can get a solid laptop which should give your mum plenty of years of happy surfing and some scope if she wishes to do more than just internet.
