Ok 'er indoors had a bag full of old coins that our grandson was looking through and we found this:

Now it's a thrupney bit but normally they are brass coloured but this one is coloured silver. Not to be confused with the small round silver thrupney bit.

Any ideas? It's 1964, was there a special issue?

Therer was nothing special about 1964 as far as I can remember and I've only seen the silver round ones or the brass version of the 12-sided ones. I wonder if someone was messing about with silver plating to turn it into an ornament. Having been taught about electroplating at school I tried it with copper sulphate and low voltage batteries.

bhg could be but it doesn't look home made, it's perfect on both sides.

'64 was the year of the Tokyo Olympics. Don't know if any coins wre specially minted, though?

if it's solid silver it might be worth a fortune!

On these shores, i should add. No doubt Japan had coins minted to mark the occasion.

Just did some more looking around. There were actually solid silver ones until 1945, the 12 sided brass one was introduced in 1937 to run alongside the silver one.

Getting excited by thrupney bits, TTT?

The only silver 1964 3d piece I have found is in the 1964 Maundy money and it's round.

As previously suggested, it is likely silver plated so might it have been done as a gift?

Nice one Ellipsis, lol.

I watch videos by one of their employees - he gets bags of coins and goes through them looking for rare coins eg. Kew Gardens 50p etc

There are similar on eBay - rare 1964 threepenny piece.

22:02 link? I can't find any.

Am on phone  now so not easy till a.m. google rare silver 1964 threepenny and Ebay listing should appear.

There are folk on eBay asking  thousands for supposedly, "rare" coins of varying denominations but I couldn't see a twelve-sided, 1964 3d coin on there.

Question Author

That's a standard brass one:

I'm not blind - they were around £300.
