Does anyone understand them please?

Google Maps gives the coordinates of a hotel as, 50. 96212, 1.83490

But when I enter them into my satnav it changes them to N 50° 26.962' E 001° 50.834'

Why does it do that, and is it correct?

I can't put the street address in because its maps can't find them

Is it in Aldershot?
No, it's not correct.

0.96212 degrees = 0.96212 x 60 minutes 57.7 minutes.

So 50.96212 deg equates to 50 deg 57.7 mins.

Similar calculation for eastings.
Isn’t it easier to use the postcode in the Sat Nav?

bhg, thanks but now I'm really confused.
drm, It's in Calais - but I might well end up in Aldershot!
That's somewhere in France - he might not have a postcode.

Maydup ; a good point, I've never done that before either, I'll try that.
1.83 assumes east, Aldershot would be -1.83
google
how do i use coordinates on google maps

and there is quite a lot there
degrees as decimal
degrees, minutes seconds
degrees minutes decimal

and sort of take it from there - yours is DD and you need to convert to DMS - or use a google map, find he place and street and read it

didnt know it cd be such fun
Question Author
No there's no postcode :0(
Doesn't always work in remote rural areas, Maydup.
I was delivering to a fish farm in the far north of Scotland and technology took me to a hotel 45 miles away, luckily mine host had had the same thing happen before so I got there by following his directions.

PP, you get the Google maps app, find the place on the map by enlarging it, click on the spot & it registers it, then you right click on it again and it gives the coordinates.
But they're no b. use if your satnav can't accept them!
If you use Google Earth you can change the way coordinates are displayed via the settings tab.
It could be that your satnav is expecting you to enter them in a different format?

Those values on Google generate the degree coordinates of 50°57'43.6"N, 1°50'05.6"E - which is in Calais.
use WHAT3WORDS
What make is your satnav, Khandro? On my Garmin I have the following choices for 'Coordinate Format':
h ddd.ddddd°
h ddd° mm.mmm'
h ddd° mm' ss.s"
Assuming that you're trying to get to the Hotel Restaurant de la Plage, the street address is 693 Digue Gaston Berthe, 62100, Calais.
Question Author
Etch the satnav is a Garmin, it's ageing now, but I have updated it about 3 years ago.
Chris , the hotel is next to that one, it's the Hotel du Golf.
If your satnav can find one hotel, Khandro, I reckon that you can probably find the one next door to it ;-)

For the record though, change 693 to 745 for the correct street address.

If you're looking for somewhere nice to eat in Calais (without paying a fortune), I can thoroughly recommend Au Calice:

Thanks Chris I've noted that . As I said earlier though, my satnav doesn't recognise the street address, not even the Boulevard Charles de Gaulle which is close by.
Maybe when I'm France it will do so. I chose the hotel for the night simply because it's near the tunnel for an early start next day, - & pets are allowed.
Khandro - my Garmin nüvi 2599 is getting on for 8 years old now. You don't say which model you have, but on mine the 'Coordinate Format' settings are (from the top-level screen) under 'Settings' > (scroll down) 'Units & Time' > 'Position Format' > 'Coordinate Format'. Yours appears to be set to 'h ddd° mm.mmm'. If you select 'h ddd.ddddd°' ('Save' etc) then that will allow you to correctly enter the coordinates given by Google Maps.
