Is there any way of avoiding static shocks when shutting a car door on a Citroen Xsara Picasso. However strangely enough this does not happen on a Hyundai i10.

I had the same problem with one of my cars some years ago. I fixed something like this to the car which seemed to help.

We've had three of these cars and all gave the same problem.

I found that not using fingertips to close the door helped.
Some incorrectly claim that the shocks are the result of discharging a static build-up on the car body – this is not the case. The static charge is built-up on your body as a result your interaction with the car seat material – and then discharged as you touch the car body.

The charge is built-up as a result of you getting up from the car seat. To avoid this resulting in a shock, whilst removing yourself from the car seat, ensure that you are in contact with a conductive part of the car which will result in any charge being discharged as it builds up, preventing any shock.
Touch the window before shutting the door.
Buy German, not French or Russian, shocking that this may be.
Hymie's got it. It depends on the material of the car seat and your clothes. Friction between them causes a static build-up in your body, which is discharged when your hand touches the metal of the car. One solution is to 'get over it.' It won't kill you. :-)
Not unless you get such a belt as to jump back into the path of an oncoming juggernaut.
Oh, come on, Dougie! It's only a little prick! :-)
