Just out in the garden for a cigarette and saw a reddish 'star' in the sky. Is it Mars?

Yes Sandy. It is.
Very prominent at the moment
If it was fairly low on the Horizon then most probably. As Mars gets higher(to us) in the night sky the red tint disappears somewhat. If it was to the left and below the moon it may have been directly in line with Neptune, which sometimes looks blue, to the right of Mars and slightly above Mars, and Uranus which would be below and to the left of Mars. Following a line of sight through Uranus, Mars, Neptune and the Moon you will have seen big, bright, Jupiter the giant to the right and above the Moon.
Mars was at it's biggest and brightest at the beginning of October. I will likely not ever see it like that again.

I can see Mars and the Moon but none of the planets.
Mars is quite high in the sky at the moment and noticeably red, as you saw. I don’t think the other planets are currently visible with the naked eye due either to location or brightness
The other two planets were only visible in the same vista for a short period. As the heavens have moved so has their relative perceived proximity.
