I'm not a knitter but would like to help out the village with some very simple stuff which requires size six needles - the only pair I have is either 6 or 9 so my question is, which way up must the needles be to read the size correctly - pointed end up or down - many thanks and stay well

According to SWMBO it should have a line under the number but if not the standard should be to hold it point down. Also, a size 6 is about 5mm across and a 9 is 9mm which is a very chunky needle.
I thought a six would be thicker than a nine?
That's an interesting chart Mamya, especially noting that UK sizes stop rising at less than half an inch (in real units LOL) but the US go up to 1 inch - I can't imagine anyone knitting with needles that thick, like broomsticks.

Thank you for the answers but unfortunately having a size chart doesn't help and there's no line underneath the number. I was hoping someone had some needles, not necessarily a size 6 or 9 and they could look at them and just tell me whether they are reading it point up or point down. Without stating the obvious if I look at my needles point up it's a 6 and point down it's a nine. not sure I can accurately measure the circumference.
Point down size 9. Mine are in front of me now. What are you going to be knitting

calmak thank you that's what I wanted to know - I have a size 9 but I need a 6 so bother, bother, bother - actually it's not a hassle I was just hoping to make use of what I'd got, I can easily get a pair of 6. I thought it would be nice to help a village initiative of knitting triangles of bunting to be used in a village celebration when this covid thing is over. Thank you very much and stay well.
