Bone marrow is taken under general anaesthetic and therefore pain-free. (However there might be some pain around the donor site afterwards).

The more unpleasant part is probably the conditioning treatment in the week before the cells can be transplanted (see link), although the transplant process itself is simple and pain-free.

hi i used to work on a BMT unit, The actual transplant is an infusion, and so is pain free, like having a drip.
