Is your phone set to connect to the Internet as that may be using your credit.
Do you use emoticons or emojis on your texts? They use huge amounts of credit as they convert to MMS.
Turn off all mobile data - it will be burning your credit.
Here in the U.S. (I assume same standards in the U.K.) one wants to use WiFi for as much data as possible rather than 3 or 4G. If you have a home computer, for example, the internet service should be delivered via WiFi modem which will provide service to your phone. When Mrs. C and I got our first smart phones (Apple 5S) we were amazed at (1) how much less battery life we had and (2) how much data the things gobbled.

Friends guided us through the WiFi thing and it certainly makes a big difference.

Your "plan" should provide unlimited talk and text so neither of those (at least here) are counted as "data"...
