My TV keeps switching itself off and back on again, it does this mainly at night occasionally it switches itself off totally. Sometimes it switches the Digi-box off too but the DVD player & VCR never turn off. Is this an electrical problem or have i got a ghost?

I keep getting this lately - the TV switches off - then when you switch it on again - it switches off straight away - then after about 3-5 times it will stay on.

I recently found that my TV was on in the morning and just blamed myself.  Then it woke me up a few times when I was sure I`d turned it off.  Realised that the cats had been sitting on remote control and switching it on!. Now put control on shelf.

I recently found my TV on in the morning and blamed myself for leaving it on.  The it woke me up a few times before I realised that the cats had been sitting on the remote control left on a chair.  Not it goes on a shelf at night!   Probably not your problem but goes to show how some things have a simple answer.
It would be if we had a cat (or dog)
Why not unplug it when you go to bed, then if it does come on again its a ghost!!or a relative slipping out of bed late at night to watch channel x(:)

Did you know that although the signal sent from your remote control is complex for features and channel changing the power button is often a very simple infrared pulse. If its switching off whilst using a remote control try changing the batteries in all your remotes (Ive just counted and got 5!!!)

Is your TV near a window and receiving someone elses remote signal?

Do you keep the remote under your cushion?

Ok i haven't got any pets, my t.v is near a window though but it has been there for the past 3months at least and i have never had any problems before the past 2 weeks. i will change the batteries in my remote and see if it stops. i don't keep it under a cushion but i have been pointing it away from the t.v after i switch it on because i thought it might be the remote.

try checking to see if your tv/vcr or digi box have a on/off timer, it might be that it has been inadvertantly setup.

Also try turning the TV off from the front if the set and not the standby function from the remote.

Hello. (new member here). Same as tubeway, mine is displaying exactly the same tactics for the last three weeks. Switches itself off (not on timer). I switch on, goes off, switch on again etc. It seems to have 20 minute silly sessions, then it stays on (for a few hours till it goes off again...

It defies logic, re hot cold, time of day etc - just seems to have silly sessions. Good telly though, so don't want to replace it unless I have to.

Regards.
We have same problem, tv switches off some evenings, and when using remote to switch on, it switches off straight away. We were in TV store choosing a replacement, and bumped into our neighbour, who had exactly same problem, at same times! No tvs bought that day! We now think it could be tv stations testing digital signals!
Interesting idea about signal testing by the transmitter as it's the nearest I've got to any sense of logic. If it were a power supply problem on my telly or overheating etc, it would be more consistent - or evident from its antics.

I have noticed that my telly's silly session goes on for about 10 to 20 mins (once every 2 to 5 mins) - and then it's OK again for a lot of hours (12 or so) until it cuts out in the middle of the night, but usually only once then. It's perfectly fine otherwise.

Could be something in that... and I thank you for posting that possibility. It's stopped me from throwing a good telly through the window LOL. I wonder if we can find out... I 'll have a little think to see if there is any info out there... :)
