At work and every time I close the car door I get static shocks. So much so at work that I actually hate having to touch anything now because they are so frequent and strong, they actually hurt.

What can you do to stop them?

Stop wearing man made fibres ? Leave off the rubber soled shoes ?
Dont know but would love to know the answer. Once I touched my son on the arm and gave him such a shock he nearly leapt out of his skin. Blooming hurts doesnt it.
Use fabric softener in your clothes. Get anti static seat covers for the car or remember to touch the window before touching the metal on the car. This discharges the electrical charge.

Well my rubber soles would be all my warm footwear. I can't stop wearing them :(

I thought the window thing worked but I tried that yesterday and still got a shock. I kick the car door closed now but I can't walk around the office kicking stuff.
I get them from the car, but only when I'm one pair of trainers, which have a natural gum sole, so as OG said, try changing your shoes.
Perhaps you can fix a long chain from your ankle or wrist and earth yourself as you walk about ;-)
I'm wearing one, that should have said.

Lol, that might be my only opton OG. The shoes I normally wear to work are my Uggs and they aint cheap. There's no way I'm keeping them in the cupboard. :)
Quite often the cat snaps me but the other day I snapped the cat he got such a fright poor thing. Use body lotion and definitely try and avoid synthetic clothing good luck.
I end up pulling my sleeve down over my hand to shut the car door lol.
You can buy "anti static straps" to prevent shocks from your car.
I've never had one, so I don't know if they actuay work or not. Do a search on Ebay, they're only a few quid so you never know ........
Try clapping your hand together before getting hold of anything metal this disperses the static. Make sure your on you are on your own when you do this because if your seen clapping your hands together for too long somebody might just throw you a fish.
I believe the issue with the car "anti static straps" is that you get a shock because you are charged rather than because the car is charged, so even if they did earth the car they aren't going to make any difference.
I have a fleecy dressing gown and every morning, when I go to have a wash, I get a shock when I put my hand in the water. I daren't have a shower, first thing. My hair would stand on end!
if you go to the med you'll see lots of cars with earth straps as your most likely to get a shock in hot dry weather
may be buy one fit it and see if any difference
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ground-Belt-Earth-Static-Strap/dp/B0052WMRRU
Put drawing pins into shoe soles
deggers, in the med they also use them to prevent car sickness.
That makes sense, because connecting the car to the ground will have major affects on the fluid in your inner ear slopping about.
Old_Geezer lol .... cynical old sod
