I write 'GONE AWAY, RETURN TO SENDER' on the front of the envelope and stick it back in the post. They eventually get the message.

What really got me was that the previous owner of my house had gone into a nursing home, and why her son couldn't just leave us her new address to forward her post on to her I don't know. All he had to do was leave a note in the kitchen or something, but no, he couldn't do that, or redirect her mail, so for months I was receiving all sorts of things for her, tax returns, bank statements, cheques that I had now way of getting to her. It was just a chance conversation I had with a neighbour down the road one day that led to me finding out which nursing home she was in and being able to let her have her important mail.
why dont you just shred it, then post it back to them in their prepaid envelope

Then they wouldn't know who it was from. And there's no point in going halfway about it, wrap up a breeze block and stick their pre-paid envelope to it.

I have printed stickers with:

NOT KNOWN AT THIS ADDRESS

SENDER: PLEASE REMOVE FROM YOUR RECORDS.

PO: PLEASE RETURN TO SENDER

I stick one over the address and post back. The senders of junk mail hate this because it costs them postage so they update their databases. Seems to work, over time the number of letters for former occupants has fallen dramatically. I still do get some though from scam marketeers who have bought lists years old from scam list sellers, I just shred those.

as a postman  i can assure you  all you have to do  is indeed put  GONE  AWAY !!   RETURN  TO SENDER  very  clearly  on the front of any letter you get  and post it back in any postbox. We  get it back  and we return it  to the sender  or  distroy it  if theres no  ruturn address. It  can take time  to stop them comming but  it usually does stop eventually.
write back 2 the senders saying that a new owner owns the house and to stop sending the mail coz the people dont live there ani more
