Is it possible to inflate ordinary rubber balloons with helium rather than paying for latex ? I only need them to be inflated for 10 hours or so.

Yes, but the helium cylinder is expensive to hire and to pay for what you've used. Google for "party supplies".

CostCo do a Party Balloon box with helium tank, ballons and ribbons for 30ish quid...
