These were purchased new today but for some reason unable to get them to work. The manual is about 10 lines long. Tried weighing a 1kg bag of sugar but it comes up gogglegook.

The lithium battery has to be fitted correctly and wonder whether this is the cause of the problem as I have tried it in various positions. I assume I have put it in correctly with the writing on the top?

I should say they are the Salter ARC electronic kitchen scale.
There are a few reviews here that look as if the battery can be a problem. I didn't have the salter ones but couldn't get away with them at all.

If I were you (and this looks like an on-going problem), I would return for a refund (which is why I get this sort of stuff from Argos- very easy to return for exchange or refund). I've had Kenwood digital scales for several years- still on original battery.
