Redecorating 'Higher Priority Than Legal Changes'

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

When viewing prospective new homes, many of us are shocked at the apparent taste of the current owners, but we are always able to look past the awful wallpaper to the true value of the house. However, it seems that we cannot live with the old decor for long and redecorating is one of the first things we do on moving into a new home.

Over half of people in the UK look to redecorate before they consider anything else when buying a new home, according to new research. Some 54 per cent of homeowners place painting their property as a higher priority over changing the locks, a leading legal firm has found.

In addition, 52 per cent see putting up new curtains as a more worthwhile task than adjusting their will. Young people are particularly susceptible to this, with 77 per cent of 18 to 24 year-olds putting off tasks which could see them avoid debt in the future in order to redecorate.

"It is vital to get the legalities sorted out to save complications further down the line," said a spokesman for the company.

There are quite a few things that you should do and that it is advisable to do when you move into a new home.

What to do when you move:

•    Contact your local Council Tax office with the relevant dates so they bill you correctly.
•    If you receive benefits contact the local Jobcentre Plus office.
•    You can download the form from the Post Office website. It can take up to 10 days to set up and there is a charge.
•    Contact utility providers (gas, water, electricity) you may have new ones at your new address.
•    Update your driving licence and vehicle registration documentation
•    Contact TV licensing to notify the change of address.
•    Identity cards such as passport will need to be updated.
•    Notify your employer of your new address.
