THE number of private homes with swimming pools is rocketing. Once thought of as a luxury for the ultra-rich, there are now a wide range of surprisingly affordable pools on the market.

So how much money are we talking about

You can get a basic above-ground pool for as little as 2,500. These are prefabricated kits that you put up yourself on a piece of level ground. A do-it-yourself in-ground pool starts at about 5,000, while the most popular option, a one piece plastic liner start at around 9,000.

The cheapest concrete in-ground pools, which can be decorated with tiles, are around 16,000for a 24ft by 12ft model, including instillation, while the very top of the range can cost up to 200,000.

According to the pool manufacturers trade body, the Swimming Pool & Allied Trades Association (SPATA) the average spend on a standard outdoor model is 15,000, which includes the costs of filtration and heating systems and paving.

The cost of an indoor pool will depend on what sort of structure you house it in, whether it already exists or you have to build one etc.

What are the options for putting a pool indoors

If cost is not so much of a consideration, then an indoor pool has many advantages. You will be able to swim all-year round, don't have to worry about covering the pool overnight and it will cost much less to heat than an outdoor pool.

A large conservatory provides a perfect light and airy enclosure or there are plenty of Swedish-style log cabins on the market. At the cheaper end there are inflatable enclosures available. Even a large polytunnel would do the job.

What should I consider before I commit to buying a pool

Remember to include the cost of heating and filtration costs in your calculations. The SPATA recommend you get at least three quotes before you go ahead. Think about location, especially if you are going for an outdoor model. Overhanging trees will mean having to remove leaves on a regular basis while a flat site will cut the cost of landscaping.
