Can anyone explain a possible reason for the smell of shoe polish suddenly occurring in the house? It's a split level bungalow and the smell mainly occupies the upper part, usually after prolonged rain at the end of a dry spell.

Can anyone else smell it, or just you?
Sincerely hope there's some other explanation, but one symptom of brain tumours is phantom smells.
Sorry if this alarms you, but the sooner these things are diagnosed, the better the chance of recovery.
Are you sure it's not just your nose that's having an olfactory problem?

Or perhaps the it might have something to do with the water and the material the roof top is made from?
vagrant from what I have heard that is usually a burning rubbery smell connected with brain tumours
I would be more concerned about some of the 'rots' fungus invading your roof timbers having growth flurries and sending up fruiting bodies when they get enough moisture....
being a bit less alarmist, odd smells can be s symptom of sinusitis.
Have you used any wood treatments recently? My front fence/gates smell very strongly after it's rained.
The fact that it trends to occur under certain conditions makes me suspect it is more likely to be an external problem rather than a health one. Can only suggest you pull things out, look in the loft, follow your nose and try to discover the source. Damp timber/ rot, something like that seems most likely to me. Shoe polish is a new one on me though :-) Perhaps it is the phantom polish fairy; how are your shoes in the morning ?
