Hello
can anyone tell me please how to clean black spots on silver, I have purchased an antique silver hatpin and have cleaned it with a silver cloth but I still have a couple of black spots on it that are quite noticable, is there a jeweller or any one that can tell me how to get rid of the spots? I feel I have to be a bit careful as it is old silver.

any help appreciated

Simply mix a teaspoon full of baking soda with warm water... just enough to make a paste. Spread it on the pin, rub gently, rinse - - - et voila!

Larger pieces, such as silver plates and serving dishes are easily cleaned by placing a sheet of aluminum (your aluminium) foil... shiny side up in a glass dish of some sort. place some hot water in the disn... enough to cover the item being cleaned and then add a small palm full of baking soda. When it's dissolved, place the piece to be cleaned in the solution and walk away... just walk away. Leave it for an hour or so, the tarnish will have transferred to the foil liner... (It works better if the water is really hot)...

thankyou I will give it a try
I bought some silver cleaner from John Lewis. It comes in a tall plastic container with a tray inside, Put your hatpin on the tray. Lower it into the liquid for a few minutes and hey presto. It's brilliant for jewellry and cutlery.
